Start by converting both sets of odds to implied probability. For decimal odds, divide 1 by the odds. Odds of 2.50 imply 40 percent, and odds of 2.20 imply about 45.5 percent.

Now compare. If you bet at 2.50 and the line closed at 2.20, your price implied 40 percent while the closing price implied 45.5 percent. You captured roughly 5.5 percentage points of value, so your CLV on that bet is positive.

For a cleaner figure, use percentage CLV, which expresses the improvement relative to the closing price. Divide your odds by the closing odds and subtract one. Taking 2.50 on a line that closed at 2.20 gives about 13.6 percent CLV. That number tells you how much better your price was than the market's final answer.

One refinement matters for accuracy. The closing line at a sportsbook includes the vig, so for a precise measurement you should remove it first and compare against the no vig closing price. Otherwise you are measuring against a number that includes the book's margin rather than the market's true estimate.

What Good CLV Actually Looks Like

Expectations here should be modest, because the closing line is genuinely hard to beat.

Consistently positive CLV of any size means you are finding value before the market corrects. Even a small average edge, a percentage point or two across hundreds of bets, indicates a real and sustainable process. Professionals do not beat the close by enormous margins. They beat it slightly, over and over, and let volume do the work.

The critical detail is consistency rather than magnitude. One bet with huge CLV proves nothing. A few hundred bets averaging modest positive CLV proves a great deal. How to Consistently Beat the Closing Line
